However full-length over trou are sometimes best - notably for commuting when you want to keep your long pants dry, or when touring to really cold and/or wet places.
The Helter Skelters had been on my wish list for some time. They have just had their first work out on the Great Victorian Bike Ride (Great Ocean Road). We had quite a bit of rain and I wore the Helter Skelters for several days and around camp at night as well. They performed extremely well keeping me warm and dry without being hot or constrictive. I won't travel without them now.
I bought a pair of medium Helter Skelters some 18 months ago. I was a little concerned about the waistband press stud pulling out of the fabric as it was fairly tight. Earlier this year I spent 3 weeks cycling in France and Switzerland. Each day was wet and very cold, snow was falling 200 metres above us. The Helter Skelters were worn every day to keep my body both dry and warm. I doubt I would have continued my journey without them. The waist band press stud is still in place. I cannot recommend them strongly enough.
I bought a pair of Helter Skelter rain pants/knickers in april and rode in then 6, 7 days and the fabric on the seat shows a huge amount of abrasion. it's fuzzy. the DWR no long works as well anywhere on the pants. I bought these for the Tour Divide race and took them this year worrying they wouldn't last the trip as they were so worn when I started the race. I only needed them the first day for 140 miles of rain and light snow. i wore them training six days for a total of 420 miles. so they lasted all of 560 miles, 850k. For the price I don't think i got my money's worth out of these pants.
Hi John, we’re sorry to hear your Helter Skelters are no longer in tip top condition. Training for an event like the Tour Divide certainly will put some serious miles on your kit. We’re not surprised your Helter Skelters are showing signs of wear and tear. 850km in adverse weather would mean a fair amount of potential for abrasion in the seat area, and the DWR - Durable Water Repellency does reduce over time. We’ve chosen to use a lightweight breathable fabric with all the obvious benefits including comfort whilst pedalling, and small packed size. It sounds like they did the trick for you, but if you’d like to return them fire them back to us. Pedal on, Ernie
Dry dry dry shorts live on beneath these helter skelters ... ignoring those Fiordland downpours ... love them thanks!
The older of the Rowallan Road BIke Nerds rides the wet in an old pair of MEC rain pants specially designed for biking and no longer offered by that great Northern Co-op. The younger of our crew rides with Helter Skelters and he reports full satisfaction especailly with the length which ensures the chain doesn’t have a chance to do any damage.
